Many early
readers are not excited about sitting down to enjoy a good book. They might
struggle so much that they continuously loose the mental picture of what they
are reading. Or maybe the reading level that they can comprehend is much lower
than their age and the readings are boring to them. Using books on tape is a
great way to support a below level reader. Just seeing and hearing the words
helps to build our reading vocabulary. The only trick is to make sure that the
child is tracking as they are listening. Go down to your local library and see
what books they have on tape. Check out the book and the tape and get started.
Always have them read five to ten minutes out loud and the rest of the time
they can listen and track.
Playing simple matching games
using synonyms, same meanings, and antonyms, opposite meaning, can help to
build vocabularies. A simple car game seeing who can list the most can be fun
and easy. Using antonyms with bill boards to make funny changes is
fun.
